Center the 4 claws over the middle of the weed and press the footpad straight down, then REMOVE YOUR FOOT.
Lean the handle toward the footpad. Don't lift or twist. The claws close around the root and the weed comes out.

It works best in softer soil. On hard clay or rocky ground, soak the area the day before so the claws can go deep enough to grab the root.
Make sure you take your foot off the footpad before you lean the handle, and center the claws over the middle of the weed.
