Works Best For

  • Dandelions
  • Thistle
  • Crabgrass
  • Plantain
  • Other taproot weeds in lawns and open beds

Works best in softer soil, especially after a good watering or rainfall. It may not perform as well on hard clay or rocky ground.

Tips From Grampa

  • Weed the day after a rain, or water the area first. Roots slide out of moist soil much more easily.
  • Go straight down. Keep the handle upright as you step so the claws go deep around the root.
  • Pull weeds before they go to seed. Every puffball you stop is fewer dandelions next year.
  • Fill the holes with a little soil or grass seed so new weeds don't move in.
  • Fall is a great time to weed: perennial weeds push their energy into their roots, so pulling them now keeps them from coming back in spring.

What People Are Saying

  • “This simple tool is an ace at pulling up deep-rooted lawn weeds like dandelions.”
    Wirecutter
  • “Weeds in my mulched garden, especially ones with thicker roots, like dandelions, came up perfectly about 90 percent of the time.”
    Popular Mechanics
  • “An environmentally friendly option for pulling weeds without the use of chemicals.”
    The Old Farmer's Almanac
Grampa's Story

Since 1913

Grampa's Story

Grampa's Weeder has been pulling weeds and their roots for over 100 years. Invented in 1913 in Seattle, Washington, it quickly became a must-have tool for gardeners in the Great Northwest. Production stopped in 1941 when metal was needed for the war effort, and it didn't come back after the war.

That changed in 1999, when Greg found his mother-in-law's old garden tool in her garage. Once he figured out how it worked, he was hooked. Grampa's Gardenware Co. was born in our family garage in Oregon. At tradeshows, folks kept picking it up and saying "My Grampa had one just like that!" and the name picked itself.

What worked well in 1913 still works well today. Everything old is new again!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why didn't the weed come out?

The most common mistake is keeping your foot on the footpad while you lean. Press the claws in, take your foot off, then lean the handle toward the footpad. Make sure the claws are centered over the middle of the weed, and water dry soil first.

Does it work in clay or rocky soil?

Grampa's Weeder works best in softer soil, especially after a good watering or rainfall. On hard clay or rocky ground the claws can't go as deep, so soak the area the day before you weed.

What kinds of weeds does it pull?

It is made for weeds with a central taproot, like dandelions, thistle, plantain and crabgrass. It is less effective on very small seedlings, spreading grass, or narrow gaps along concrete where the claws can't fit.

What if the root breaks off?

Big, old dandelions can have roots 6 to 18 inches deep. Water first for the best chance of getting it all. If a root snaps, watch that spot and pull any new leaves as soon as they appear.

How do I clean and store it?

Knock the soil out of the claws after use. If a small stone gets wedged, pry it out with a screwdriver. Wipe the head clean and store the tool somewhere dry.

How tall is it?

The tool is 46 inches tall with a 45 inch bamboo handle, so most adults can use it standing upright.
